It was a year ago this week that wildfires devastated large swaths of Northern California, and now, the threat of fires has returned.
The National Weather Service says there will be windy, dry conditions this weekend, and they are asking people to be prepared.
As a precaution, Cal Fire is also increasing staffing.
Well, fire season this year in California got off to a fast start. We had a very busy summer, but the past few weeks have been more or less quiet.
On Friday morning, a fast-moving grass fire broke out along Interstate 5 near the town of Winters in Solano County. The fire eventually reached four alarms and evacuation orders were issued in the area.
Fortunately, fire crews were able to contain the blaze by early afternoon and most residents were allowed to return home.
The fire comes just as the National Weather Service is warning that there will be an increased chance of wildfire in the days ahead. The service has issued a fire weather watch for the North Bay mountains and East Bay hills.
Those areas could see wind gust up to 50 miles per hour and humidity dropping as low as 5 percent. The weather watch lasts from Saturday evening through at least Monday morning.
In response, Cal Fire announced on Friday they will be staffing up across the state in the days ahead. They are also asking that everyone do their part to avoid starting a fire.
As for that fire in Solano County, the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
And finally, Cal Fire is also asking that people be on the lookout for arsonists.
If you see any suspicious activity, report it to the police.
