ROCKFORD (WQRF) — October marks the beginning of flu season and doctors are reminding the public it’s time to get a flu shot.
Doctors say it’s especially important for pregnant women to get vaccinated. The flu can cause life-threatening complications. According to a recent CDC study, only about half of expected mothers get the flu shot. Many skip the vaccine due to safety concerns.
“People could react adversely to the flu vaccine, but those reactions are very rare,” said Tim Durkee, M.D. at SwedishAmerican. “There’s a risk to any medical treatment. For pregnant women, [it] far outweighs the risks of being vaccinated.”
The CDC recommends everyone over the age of six months get a flu shot annually.
