SANTA ANA, California (KSEE) — A 55-year-old woman’s body was found on Tuesday after a man on the side of the road told officers he had killed someone.

The Santa Ana Police Department says Visalia California Highway Patrol made contact with 55-year-old Milton Louis Mayfield of Anaheim just before 5 p.m. while he was in a disabled vehicle on the side of the freeway in Tulare County.

During the stop, officers say Mayfield was making “spontaneous statements” indicating he may have killed someone in a motel room.

After multiple motel room searches, they found an unresponsive woman in a Sunshine Village Motel room, near First Street and Grand Avenue.

Deborah Ann Simon, 55, of Santa Ana, was identified as the victim. She died at 5:21 a.m. Wednesday.

Santa Ana police interviewed Mayfield and took possession of the car he was found in. Based on the interview and evidence from the crime scene, Mayfield was into Santa Ana City Jail on suspicion of homicide.

The motive of the murder has not been determined.

The cause of Simon’s death is pending.
