The FAA has sent out a safety alert to Bay Area pilots to be careful when flying above a gun range located in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Los Gatos.

On Thursday, KRON4 visited the gun range, which said it is glad the notice went out as it has longed feared a tragedy could take place.

The safety alert, accompanied with a map, was sent out to pilots in the Bay Area, warning them to stay above 500 feet of the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club Gun Range located in the Santa Cruz Mountains off Skyline Boulevard in Los Gatos.

The FAA said this alert went out because of planes flying low above the gun range.

The gun club sits at a higher elevation in a remote area deep in the woods, up in the mountains.

It’s been there for over 60 years. The manager John Carlsen says the FAA notice went out because of the gun range.

It reported to the FAA that recently, they have had a problem with low-flying aircraft.

Carlsen says there have been about a dozen incidents in the past year.
