Oakland Police Department is closely monitoring their body cameras after an officer with the New York Police Department ripped the camera off his chest just moments before it exploded.

On Sunday night, the New York officer grabbed a body-cam before heading out for his midnight shift.

The bottom of the camera began smoking leading the officer to immediately take it off.

Officials say moments after it was removed, it exploded.

Oakland has reached out to the NYPD and is working closely with them to get to the bottom of the situation.

OPD is also working with Axon to determine the cause.

Oakland says they have not suspended their cameras until more information is determined.

The department says their officer’s safety is important and if found that the cameras will harm them, then the body-cams will be removed immediately.

The Oakland Police use LE-5 and LE-4 cameras.

New York officers using the LE-5 were told to immediately remove them.

However, the issue did not pertain to the LE-4 body-cameras.
