LOUISVILLE, Ky (WCMH) – The staff of a Kentucky radio station decided they weren’t afraid of a little controversy and played ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ on a two-hour loop Sunday morning.
“BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE! We like it and we’re not afraid to play it on WAKY for the next couple of hours!” radio station WAKY wrote on its Facebook page Sunday morning, as the marathon began.
Several radio stations across the country have decided against playing the song this year, saying the song’s lyrics are inappropriate.
“People might say, ‘oh, enough with that #MeToo,’ but if you really put that aside and listen to the lyrics, it’s not something I would want my daughter to be in that kind of a situation,” Star 102 midday host Desiray told Fox 8.
“I’m not sure why it’s controversial,” Joe Fredele, director of programming for WAKY told WLKY. “We’ve played this song for years, you know, this song is older than WAKY is. It’s almost 70 years old.”
During the marathon, WAKY played five different versions of the song.
“It’s just a fun way of saying, ‘Hey this our vote for that song. It’s a fun song. It’s a romantic song, don’t pick on it,'” Fredele said.
